John Swinney joined the SNP in the early 1980s and was the secretary of the Young Scottish Nationalists. He served in a number of posts within the SNP such as National Secretary, Vice-Convenor for Publicity. Deputy Leader and then Leader from 2000-2004. He was elected MP for Tayside North in 1997 before becoming MSP for the same constituency in 1999. He served as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Development in the SNP minority government 2007-2011.
